The SOPACDI cooperative (Solidarité Paysanne pour la Promotion des Actions Café et Development Intégral), located near Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is an organization comprising more than 5,600 farmers from different ethnic groups, roughly 20 percent of whom are women.

After years of conflict and civil war, their coffee promotes working together for a better future. Joachim Munganga, who was a farmer himself, founded SOPACDI in 2003 by restoring a washing station in the area, which provided service and market access to the growers in these extremely remote highlands. Before he undertook this work, many farmers had little to no means to transport coffee to the markets, and instead were forced to either barter their coffee locally for food, clothing, and necessities; sell their coffee to smugglers; or smuggle it themselves across Lake Kivu into Rwanda. It was very dangerous and many farmers lost their lives.

The cooperative was the first to achieve Fair Trade certification in Congo, and the coffee also carries organic certification. SOPACDI has responded to inequality faced by it’s female members by offering a 2-cent premium per pound for any coffee grown by a woman. The solidarity and price premiums enable them to provide for their families. Many have returned to their homes to join SOPACDI.
