SUMATRA BENER MERIAH REDELONG is sourced from family-owned farms around the Redelong Organic Cooperative (REO), located in the Gayo Highlands of the Aceh province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. REO was established in 2014 with a long term goal of establishing greater control over the harvest to export process where long delays can compromise the quality of coffee and diminish opportunities to earn market premiums. Many of the cooperative leaders and founding farmers were also part of the organic Fair Trade cooperative movement started in Indonesia in the mid-1990s. REO has a blooming membership with over 700 small coffee producers from 4 villages in the Bener Meriah regency. Many of the REO members also have leadership roles in local government, which helps to stimulate collaboration on coffee production and community development projects.
